Description
PT-141, also known as Bremelanotide, is a synthetic melanocortin receptor agonist derived from the α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) peptide structure. Unlike phosphodiesterase inhibitors, PT-141 acts directly on the central nervous system, particularly through MC3R and MC4R receptors in the hypothalamus, to enhance sexual desire and arousal.
Research has shown that PT-141 may increase sexual motivation and responsiveness without affecting vascular function, making it distinct from compounds used to address erectile dysfunction. It has been investigated in both male and female models for its potential to treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) and other forms of sexual dysfunction.
Beyond its effects on libido, PT-141 has also been studied for potential roles in appetite regulation, energy balance, and mood modulation due to its action on melanocortin pathways. Its central mechanism of action and non-hormonal profile make it a valuable compound in neuroendocrine and behavioral research.
